“You Forgot the Change” functions as an anti-monument to political failure and electoral residue. The work brings together the portraits of Romanian presidential candidates who lost the elections from 1989 to the present, excluding those who later became presidents.The 76 heads are stacked vertically in a compressed structure, developed both as a 3D rendering and as a small-scale model. Conceived for a future 1:1 realization of the portraits, the work would reach a height comparable to Constantin Brâncuși’s “Endless Column” and is imagined as being installed inside the vertical void of a ten-storey apartment block.
The title plays on the double meaning of “change”: political transformation, repeatedly promised through electoral discourse, and the small, often neglected amount of money returned after a transaction. In this sense, the work treats the electoral system as a mechanism that produces not only winners and official histories, but also remainders: figures temporarily made visible, then rapidly pushed outside collective memory. What is forgotten is not only the promised change, but also those who were left behind by the transaction of representation.Rather than celebrating victory, the work archives defeat.
The accumulation of heads does not suggest ascension, but compression, repetition, and unresolved political desire. Individual identities gradually dissolve into a shared mass, turning the monument into a counter-archive of failed candidacies, symbolic excess, and discarded public visibility.
